EDUCATION stakeholders have been urged to cooperate with the government in making a conducive learning environment for primary school pupils.
The call was made by the Director of Education Materials Design and Development at the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) Mr Nickson Ntelesi during an event to mark the World Reading Day on Thursday.
The day is marked every 8th of September with the aim of creating a common understanding in society about the importance of knowledge on how to read and write, in a bid to create a reading habit among members of the community.
He said, stakeholders have a crucial role to play in creating a supportive learning environment for primary school pupils across the country.
“Education is a cross cutting sector that needs collaborative efforts by the government, parents and other stakeholders to ensure children are well taught and become knowledgeable in a number of issues for their future prosperity,” he said.
Mr Ntelesi also said the world reading day also helps to sensitize the community on the importance of education and the improvement of having better teaching and learning environment especially for pupils in primary schools.
This, according to him, will enable children to effectively master the skills of reading and writing while at primary schools.
“Is the right time for the students to learn how to read and have writing skills when they are in school at standard one and two, so we have to create a good environment for them to continue with that habit of reading and understanding quickly,” he added.
He emphasized on the need for students to be supplied with books that have interesting stories that will motivate them to read more.
For his part, the director of the Room to Read institution, Mr JuvenaliusKuruletera, expressed the commitment to support the government initiatives on supporting the prosperity of primary school pupils.
“In order to attract children to read, the room to read institute encourages the presence of libraries with well-prepared, interesting story books, organized according to the child’s reading ability and a friendly environment for the child,” he said.
He added that, as part of efforts to support the government’s initiatives, the institution focused on providing training to teachers to build their teaching skills for library sessions.
