Tax revenues collection raises by 60 pc in Geita

GEITA: THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in Geita Region has managed to collect 55.07bn/- for the financial year 2022/23, equivalent to an efficiency of 142.7 per cent of targeted collections of 38.59bn/-.

The collection means an increase of 20.68bn/-, compared to the collection of 34.39bn/- fetched in 2021/22 financial year, making the revenue collections rise by 60 per cent.

The TRA Commissioner of Inland Taxes, Mr Alfred Mrengi presented the statistics recently while speaking at the closing ceremony of the tax payer’s week in Geita Region, which was accompanied by award night gala for the best taxpayers.

“As we celebrate the success we achieved in the 2022/23 financial year, we are also reminded of the importance of building stronger foundations for performance in the next financial year.

“For this financial year (2023/24), the region has set a goal of collecting 44.18bn/-, it is our expectation that we will do something bigger than last financial year,” he said.

He said TRA will consider the development direction set by the Third Five-Year National Development Plan (FYDP III- 2021 to 2026), responsibly towards building a competitive economy.

He also said that TRA has planned to build systems to simplify tax payment, expand the scope of tax payers and develop new sources of income to achieve the goals of this financial year.

Geita Region Commissioner, Martin Shigella insisted that it was imperative for tax payers, tax collectors and the tax users to work closely together to expand the scope of tax collections.

He directed the regional revenue managers to ensure that the revenue is well spent, so that taxpayers can see the fruits of their taxes for them to be more motivated to pay tax voluntarily.

The Chairman of Tanzania Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA) in Geita Region, Engineer Robert Gabriel urged entrepreneurs, traders and businessmen to support the government’s efforts by keeping their business records for proper tax estimates per annum.
