Tanzania unveils plans to revive defunct industries, factories   

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has unveiled its plans to revive all dormant factories in the country so as to address issues of high costs of importing goods and unemployment.

Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo made the statement at the National Assembly on Wednesday in Dodoma, noting that the move will also solve the problem of foreign exchange drainage and increase national revenue.

The minister said that in response to a question from the Member of Parliament for Arusha Urban constituency, Mrisho Gambo, who wanted to know the government’s plan for reviving the Tanzania Pharmaceutical Industries (TPI) and General Tyre factories.

Furthermore, commenting on the TPI factory, Dr Jafo said that the government, through the Treasury Registrar, is working with an investor to revive the factory.

“Currently, we are at the final stages of repairing the factory and machinery maintenance, and as soon as the renovations are complete, production will resume,” he stated.

Additionally, he noted that as for the General Tyre factory, the government, through the National Development Corporation (NDC), is seeking a strategic investor to begin the production of vehicle tires in the country.
