Tanzania marks Wildlife Day with medicinal plants and heritage banner

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA, has today, March 3, 2026, joined other countries around the globe to celebrate World Wildlife Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the contribution of wildlife to social, economic, and environmental development.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director General of the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB), Ephraim Mafuru, said for Tanzania, wildlife is not only a natural heritage but also an integral part of the nation’s identity.

“Wildlife is the backbone of our tourism sector. It provides jobs and income for thousands of citizens. It is a source of pride that showcases our country internationally,” he said.

He added that through these resources, Tanzania has continued to be a leading global attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world to enjoy the country’s natural sites.

Mafuru emphasized that the Tanzania Tourism Board will continue to promote and develop sustainable tourism that protects the environment, respects biodiversity, and ensures that wildlife is preserved for the benefit of current and future generations.

This year’s celebrations are guided by the theme: “Medicinal Plants and Fragrance: Preserving Health, Heritage, and Life,” a reminder that Tanzania’s biodiversity is not just about natural beauty but also a source of health, traditional knowledge, employment, and community well-being.

The theme highlights the importance of protecting medicinal plants and other natural resources as part of a broader conservation strategy that links the environment, cultural heritage, and sustainable national development.
