Study about Union, pass it to future generations, Mwinyi tells Youths

DODOMA: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi yesterday emphasized the need for the youth to study and understand the history of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar forged in 1964 so that it can be passed on to the future generations.

He said the easier method to understand the history and all the information about the Union is through reading various publications that provide its detailed account.

Dr Mwinyi made the remark during the launch of two books, the 60th Anniversary book of the Vice President’s Office and the Photographic Journey of 60 years of the United Republic of Tanzania, held at Chamwino State House in Dodoma.

The launch of the books was part and parcel of celebrations towards the commemoration of 60th Anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

“Union is one of the national values that should be passed on to the coming generation, and this can only happen if the younger generation understands its history by reading various books,” he noted.

Tanzania marks the 60th Anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar made in 1964.

For six decades the Tanzania’s Union has withstood challenges that other unification attempts in Africa continent failed to become an embodiment of independent dream of African unity.

Dr Mwinyi added that it is important to learn the history of the Union and its benefits, along with its challenges that continue to be resolved.

Regarding the books, Dr Mwinyi stated that writing down history of Union is the most effective method to preserve it.

He noted that the launched books contain detailed information of the Union saying they are worth reading documents.

“There is a very big history inside these books that we launched today. This is the best way to keep the history of this country. Union is one of major things for people to understand and protect,” he asserted.

Dr Mwinyi also applauded the private sector for preparing Photographic Journey of the United Republic of Tanzania saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.

The book of Photographic Journey will enable the young generation to comprehend many aspects of the Union’s history, including the founders, the late Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume.

“Since the majority of people in our country were born after the Union, it is our duty to preserve that history through these books. If we don’t, however, anything related to the history of the Union will be forgotten by future generations,” Dr Mwinyi underlined.

In a related development, he commended President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for her decision to celebrate this year’s Union anniversary in style, noting that leaders in both sides of the Union have launched many development projects in advance of the celebrations, which reaches climax tomorrow.
