MEMBERS of the community in the Isles have been encouraged to invest in taking care of orphans and other children living in vulnerable condition in order to reduce challenges they face linked to poverty.
This call was made recently by wife of the Zanzibar First Vice-President Mama Zainab Kombo Shaib, who also doubles as Chairperson of Nuru Foundation, established to support Orphans and children in living difficult environment.
She told parents and guardians in a meeting held in Kitambuu Village, Mchangamdogo in North Pemba Region recently that it is possible to give smiles to all children by simply showing them love.
She said there are many children living in difficult environment, including orphans, insisting that it was imperative for all members of the community to invest in taking care of the group.
She said the government and few private organisations such as hers, cannot serve the group alone, without efforts of other donors.
“Apart from the government’s efforts in fighting poverty, it is still the responsibility of the community and various stakeholders to look after the vulnerable group.
We really need aid from various communities and institutions, inside and outside Zanzibar,” she called on.
Officers at the Wete District office called on the community to recognise efforts of government leaders and various development stakeholders, including the Nuru Foundation, which aim to help orphans.
On his part, the Mchangamdogo Community Leader (Sheha) Mr Asaa Makame Said explained that Mama Zainab’s support has been a great consolation for orphans and parents in Wete District and the island of Pemba in general.
“This is not the first time that Mama Zainab visits orphans in our place, every time she comes it is a comfort to us all, as she donates, and encourages collective care for children. We appreciate this love,” said the leader.
Some of the items distributed included food stuff, washing detergent and other items. The occasion was also attended by various government and community leaders.
