Simba Queens held, lose helm
AWAY venues helped Fountain Gate and JKT Queens to take command of the Women’s Premier League, leapfrogging Simba Queens who on Wednesday squandered two points after sharing spoils with their traditional rivals Yanga Princess in Dar es Salaam.
The draw dealt a blow to Simba Queens since they could be leading the race if they won it.
Yesterday’s results in the three venues; Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Iringa heightened Simba Princess’ closest challengers.
The top beneficiaries are Fountain Gate Princess who now command the pilot seat after securing a 2-0 victory over Mkwawa Queens at Mkwawa University ground in Iringa yesterday.
The win handed them 29 points, two points superior to Simba Queens who now parade 27 points at third place after a draw with Yanga Princess.
JKT Queens who defeated Baobab Queens 3-0 at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma now occupy second place with 28 points as Simba Queens are third with 25 points after the draw.
The tension was high at Uhuru Stadium where Yanga Princess came from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw with their traditional rivals Simba Queens in the Dar es Salaam Ladies derby yesterday.
The draw was a setback for Simba Queens as it allowed the team to move down two places in the 10-team Women’s Football league.
Yanga Princess, who now parade 21 points after the draw, have remained in fourth place as the women’s league heads to a closing line.
It was in the 30th minute when Jentrix Shikangwa netted the opener for Simba and the goal remained unanswered until the referee blew the half-time whistle.
Simba looked better in the most first half with a series of raids at Yanga Princess, but they ended the period with a single goal.
The second half saw Simba coming back a rejuvenated side and forced Yanga Princess to defend in numbers.
In one of the raids, Violeth Nicholaus tried her powerful shot in the 67th minute only to see it missing the target.
Yanga Princess made a substitution in the 69th minute by introducing Marry Saiki for Wogu Success and the game changed.
The substitution of Yanga paid off in the 77th minute when Wogu Success scored an equaliser and the match ended in a 1-1 draw despite many attempts on both sides.
