Seven civil servants arraigned over 1.2bn/- loss
MPIMBWE Council Treasurer in Katavi Region, Msami Mashauri has been arraigned at Mpanda District Magistrate’s Court over conspiracy, forgeries and occasioning a pecuniary loss of over 1.2bn/- the council.
Mashauri has been included in the list of the seven accused persons, who face three charges, causing a loss of more than 1.2bn/-. All seven accused are employees of Mpimbwe Council.
The accused are — Msami Mashauri, Canuthe Matsindiko, Michael Katanga, Tumaini Misese, Maila Olumba, Emanuel Salanga and Laurent Sunga.
Katavi Regional Prevention and Combating Corruption Bureau (PCCB) Attorney, Mr Kelvin Mwaja read the charges to seven accused in the presence of Principal Magistrate, Mr Gwai Sumai.
The accused were not allowed to enter any plea to the charges because the court does not have the jurisdiction to handle such a case.
The PCCB attorney claimed that investigation was still pending and pleaded with the court to reschedule the date for re-mentioning of the case.
The magistrate accepted the request and adjourned the case until September 4th, this year.
In the case, it is alleged that collectively, the accused conspired to illegally acquire over 1.2bn/- meant for Mpimbwe Council.
It was further alleged that the civil servants misused the power bestowed on them by depositing into the individuals’ bank accounts the money that was meant to pay local contractors.
