THE Police Force has heightened security across the country ahead of the Easter festivities.

Police Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) David Misime, said patrols and surveillance have been enhanced in social places and churches to ensure calm and tranquility are maintained and traffic accidents are reduced.

According to SACP Misime who spoke to journalists in Dodoma yesterday, traffic accidents continue to be a significant source of injuries and fatalities and are mostly related to avoidable human error. He stressed that drivers should observe traffic laws.“To ensure the safety of lives and property, police across the country will continue to work with the community, regardless of their religious beliefs. As part of the preparations for Easter and Ramadan fasting, we will act against crimes and traffic accidents,” said SACP Misime.

The most important thing, he continued, is that everyone must fulfil their role in enhancing public and property safety.

Also, he gave advice to church leaders who will be holding services, advising them to strengthen their security committees and get in touch with the local police chiefs to discuss ways to improve security and safety during those events.

In order to prevent any harm, including getting lost, SACP Misime also urged parents and guardians to watch over their children, saying they should examine and mark all the locations where they will be celebrating or spending time.

“Cooperation is the most effective tool for identifying and preventing crime,” he said, “so the police force will keep up its campaign of educating the public.”.

Easter, also called Paschal (Aramaic, Greek, or Latin) or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary.

It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus Christ, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and penance.

Meanwhile, the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone has issued a warning to some individuals who use the holiday season as an excuse to commit crimes.

The police are on alert and will arrest anyone who engages in such activities as a means of obtaining money, according to SACP Muliro Jumanne Muliro, the Special Zone Commander.

“There is a high level of monitoring of security issues in the city and anyone committing criminal activities will be arrested, questioned in detail and brought before other legal bodies according to the evidence gathered,” he noted.

As per SACP Muliro, the police in Dar es Salaam continue to maintain the security system in order to prevent criminal incidents and overall, the situation in the city is stable.

However, he said the police will not hesitate to continue to track and arrest those who plan and commit acts that contravene the laws of the country, as well as those who intend to do so.

Additionally, he urged people to desist from criminal activities and thanked citizens who are opposed to crime, asking them to continue providing information early so that they will be dealt with swiftly according to the law of the land.
