PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has been hailed by technocrats and political analysts, for tracing and tracking the path of Tanzania’s foreign policy, initiated by the late father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Nyerere in 1964.
In fact they say, as part of efforts to fulfill the late Mwalimu Nyerere’s vision on foreign policy, the government has been at all times embracing bilateral relations with several countries, promoting regional and continental integration.
The country also continues to embrace multilateralism, supporting South South at the forefront in honoring and developing the vision founded by the late Father of the Nation through economic diplomacy which contributes to the country’s progress.
As the country prepares to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of Mwalimu Nyerere’s death tomorrow, it evokes memories of his contribution as the founding father in building and developing international relations and diplomacy in Tanzania.
Such memories surface at the moment when the country is at a supersonic speed of practicing economic diplomacy by opening business opportunities for Tanzanians within and outside the East African Community (EAC) and encouraging foreign investors.
As the first president of Tanzania, Nyerere wanted to achieve self-sufficiency locally as he promoted his philosophy called Ujamaa at the same time; he was active in international politics to ensure a liberated Africa for all.
Tanzania’s foreign policy initiated by the late Mwalimu Nyerere in 1964 relied on protecting freedom, peace justice and equality, facilitating efforts in liberation movements.
The policy also aimed at strengthening African unity, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, Non-Alignment-Movement( NAM), supporting the efforts of the United Nations (UN) in peace and security matters and supporting efforts of eliminating exploitation in the world,
Officiating the first diplomatic symposium organised by Mozambique -Tanzania Centre for Foreign Relation (CFR) yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the Former Speaker of the national Assembly, Ms Anne Makinda unveiled that the nation will continue to embrace Mwalimu Nyerere’s vision in foreign policy in bringing country’s development.
“The government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been at the forefront in honouring and developing the foreign policy vision founded by the late Mwalimu Nyerere in 1964 including strengthening and improving the policy, and opening borders through economic diplomacy.” the Former Speaker said.
Ms Makinda further underlined that the nation will continue to recognise the contribution of the late father of the nation in building and developing international relations and diplomacy in the country which was also the main topic of the symposium yesterday.
“You will agree with me that the international relations and diplomacy of our country were founded by Mwl Julius Kambarage Nyerere through various efforts,..through Guideline No. 2 of 1964, Mwl Nyerere approved the basic principles and objectives of Tanzania’s Foreign Policy.” she added.
He further added, since that period, the principles of implementing the Foreign Policy have followed those principles and goals like protecting freedom, peace, justice and equality and strengthening African unity, Non-Alignment-Movement( NAM), supporting the efforts of the UN in peace and security matters.
In the course , the Ex-Speaker noted the late Mwalimu Nyerere is the founder of the Non-Alignment Movement which made Tanzania to have friends from different corners of the world, a situation that has greatly helped the nation to make great progress.
For his part the Chairman of the Governing Council for CFR, Ambassador Ramadhan Muhombwa Mwinyi said CFR recognises the great contribution of Mwalimu Nyerere in building the Nation, especially in building and developing International Relations and Diplomacy something made the institute organise the first diplomatic symposium.
“The Centre for Foreign Relations (CFR)’s responsibilities are to provide training, conduct research and provide guidance in matters of Diplomacy, International Relations, Strategy, conflict resolution and peace maintaining,” he said.
On the other hand, the Acting Director for CFR commended the sixth phase government under the Head of State Samia for continuing to execute the economic diplomacy while adding that the current international relations have strengthened.
