Samia to launch Kwala Dry Port, SGR cargo operations

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is set to officially inaugurate the Kwala Dry Port in Kibaha District, Coast Region, along with the launch of the high-speed cargo train (SGR) operations between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.

The historic event is scheduled to take place on July 31, 2025, in the Coast Region.

The announcement was made yesterday, July 25, 2025, by the Minister for Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, during a press briefing held in Dar es Salaam.

Professor Mbarawa explained that the government initiated the construction of the Kwala Dry Port to address long-standing congestion challenges at the Dar es Salaam Port, largely caused by the accumulation of cargo and the limited capacity of existing inland container depots.

The new facility, he said, is expected to significantly boost the country’s economic development.

“The Kwala Dry Port is a game-changer,” Prof. Mbarawa stated. “It will enhance port service efficiency by receiving approximately 30 percent of all cargo from the Dar es Salaam Port.

This will ease port congestion, reduce operational costs, and increase revenue, ultimately attracting more business to the country.”

He also highlighted the broader economic impact, noting that the facility will serve as a catalyst for industrial growth in the Coast Region and create numerous employment opportunities for Tanzanians.

The inauguration ceremony will also mark the official launch of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) cargo train services between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.

In addition, the government will unveil 50 brand-new freight wagons for the central railway line (MGR), as well as 20 refurbished wagons, further strengthening Tanzania’s rail cargo capacity.

Therefore, with the speed and efficiency of the SGR train, the time and cost of transporting goods are expected to decrease significantly, providing substantial benefits to businesses and contributing to the overall growth of the national economy.
