Samia set to grace International Day of Cooperatives
PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to grace the International Day of Cooperatives to be held at national level in Tabora Region on the 1st of July.
Tanzania Cooperatives Development Commission (TCDC)’s Registrar, Dr Benson Ndiege told reporters over the weekend that the day would be a platform to share experiences and discuss financial and economic challenges and a way forward.
This year the International Day of Cooperatives will be celebrated under the theme, ‘Cooperatives for sustainable development, he said.
It will be the climax of week-long exhibitions to start on 26th June, 2023 to 1st July, 2023 at the Nane Nane Grounds–Ipuli .
The events are coordinated by the Tanzania Federation of Cooperatives (TFC) in collaboration with other members including the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission (TCDC), COASCO, MOCU, Union, AMCOS, SACCOS as well as corporate stakeholders such as CRDB, NMB, TADB, TFS, among others.
He said the aim of the celebrations is to bring together cooperatives’ stakeholders including leaders, unions, and government leaders dealing with cooperative, among others, to showcase their activities.
Other social activities scheduled for the event include seminars, blood donations, health examination, essay competition, entertainment and sports and certificate awards.
He added that this year’s celebration is in line with cooperatives seventh pillar, which among others aims at helping the needy people in the society.
During the week, cooperative’s stakeholders will get opportunity to visit orphanages, the sick in hospitals, participate in blood donation, among others.
Speaking about achievements made since such annual event was launched in the country, TFC’s Executive Secretary and CEO, Alex Ndikile, noted that the number of cooperative members has increased from seven million to over eight million.
On his part, TFC Chairperson, Charles Jishuli, observed that cooperatives help alleviate poverty, calling on more people to join.
