REA projects’ pace thrills REB

MWANZA: THE Rural Energy Board (REB) has expressed satisfaction with implementation of six projects under the Rural Energy Agency (REA) calling upon contractors to complete them on the agreed time.

REB Chairperson Ms Janet Mbene made the remarks here during a one-day meeting with contractors and consultants for REA projects in Mwanza region.

“We are satisfied with the progress of the 122.4bn/- projects which have reached over 90 percent,” said Ms Mbene.

The projects are part of the first and second rounds of REA III, phase IIA as well as peri urban projects, which have based most in connecting electricity to health centres, mines and industries among other areas.

She said the demand for electricity is still high noting that the cost for being connected to REA electricity is 27,000/-.

Ms Mbene congratulated the residents of Nyamadoke street in Ilemela District for cooperating with the contractors.

She further assured Busekwa residents of Magu District that they will be provided with power during implementation of the extension project.

She said that they will install electricity in Chief Hangaya Primary School in Magu District.

REA Lake Zone Engineer Mr Ernest Makale said that all the 544 villages in Mwanza region have already been electrified.

He said that in Ilemela District, 532 residents of Nyamadoke street have already been connected, out of 580 customers who applied for power connection through the Peri Urban Project.

Eng Makale said in Magu all 51 villages have already been electrified. He noted that the village of Igombe is among the 51 villages of Magu District that got electricity.  He said in Igombe Village so far 22 customers who applied for electricity have been connected.

Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) Mwanza Regional Project Coordinator Eng James Kabasa expressed gratitude to REA for coming up with electricity projects to Mwanza region.

“REA has helped us a lot in reducing the complaints of the people. We are asking it to increase the money along with other projects so that we can reach more people” he said, and posing the further request.
