Director of Disaster Management Department in the Prime Minister’s Office, Major General Charles Mbuge, said the preparedness is important to prevent harm from becoming serious in the community.

He said since Ilemela Municipality is a place that also experiences disasters such as floods, fires, epidemic diseases, car accidents and water, strong winds, earthquakes and landslides, the training to equip skills among stakeholders was crucial.

Major General Mbuge said due to frequent disasters in the area his office needed to build capacity among members of the team in order to strengthen the ability in dealing with disasters.

Assistant Project Officer of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Mr Reuben Jeremiah, said the training was important in bringing the stakeholders together so that they can find best way how to prepare the team and the community to deal with the problem while at early stage.

“There is a need for strengthened awareness so that members of the public could have a broad knowledge how to avoid or reduce harm from disasters,” said Mr Jeremiah.

Coordinator of the Red Cross Organization in Ilemela Municipality Mr Emmanuel Chayunga said the joint meeting of disaster stakeholders at the Municipality will help them get to know each other and thus make it easier for them to carry out rescue operations when disasters occur.

Disaster Risk Management Officer of IOM Ms Natalie Martinsson said Mwanza, being the second largest city in Tanzania with a big population is supposed to be prepared to face some challenges caused by disasters.
