President Samia mourns demised Mikhail Gorbachev
PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has joined fellow world leaders in mourning the Soviet Union’s former leader, President Mikhail Gorbachev.
Gorbachev who ruled the Union from 1985 until 1991, when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) collapsed after a series of events, died aged 91.
In her message through her twitter account, President Samia said she was greatly saddened by the death of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
“It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of one of the most influential political leaders of USSR/Russia, Mikhail Gorbachev,” President Samia tweeted through her verified Twitter handle @SuluhuSamia.
She added: “He will be remembered globally as an outstanding peacemaker and statesman. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Amen,” she said.
Gorbachev died on Tuesday following a long illness, according to Russian state news agencies.
Gorbachev, known for his pivotal role in ending the Cold War and introducing key reforms to the USSR, has prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from world leaders
