PM to grace 2024 Uhuru torch race launch today

KILIMANJARO: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa is expected to launch the 2024 Uhuru torch race in Kilimanjaro Region today. The Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu, said over the weekend that preparations for the launch have been completed.

“This launch is historic due to the fact that this year’s race coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Revolution of Zanzibar, 60 years since the race was officially launched for annual countrywide racing, as well as the 60 years of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar,” he said.

In addition, he said that this year’s race, themed ‘Conserve the Environment and Participate in Local Election for the Building of a Sustainable Nation,’ will be held when the nation commemorates 25 years since the death of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who was the First President of Tanzania.

He said 47 development projects worth 28.7bn/- would be inaugurated in the region in the health, education, water infrastructure, roads, bridges and environment sectors.

According to him, 13 projects foundation stones are to be laid, 16 will be launched, and 18 are expected to be inspected.

“All the important preparations related to this launch have been completed. May I take this opportunity to request members of the public to come out in big numbers during the launching of the race, which will be held at the Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU) grounds,” he said.

He said the Uhuru torch race offers an opportunity for all Tanzanians to learn about the history of their nation, stimulate and mobilise the development activities, as well as building solidarity among Tanzanians.
