A NON-governmental organisation Plan International in Geita has donated a total of 52,683 textbooks for primary school pupils in the region.
The handing over of the textbooks to the Office of the Geita Regional Commissioner was held this week at Mkoani Primary School.
The textbooks handed over were for Mathematics, Science, Kiswahili, English, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.
The Assistant Project Director of Plan International, Mr Nicodemus Gachu said of the textbooks donated, a total of 43,800 were bought through the Keeping Adolescent Girls in School (KAGIS) project.
He said the KAGIS project is funded by the Canadian government, while 8,883 textbooks were bought through other projects, thus making a total cost of 438,289,448/-. The donation aimed at achieving equal access to basic education.
“This project (KAGIS) is being implemented in Geita and Kigoma regions, aiming to reach a total of 102,336 children and it is being implemented for five years and its implementation started in 2021.
A Standard Seven pupil of Mkoani Primary School, Loyce Andrea admitted that the textbooks, especially for science subjects, will boost their performance in their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) 2022.
The Geita Regional Commissioner, Mr. Martin Shigela commended Plan International for the donation, stressing on the need for the community to support and invest in girls to achieve equality in professions and leadership positions.
“The sixth phase government has laid good foundations for educating our children, it has made great efforts to facilitate the education sector, many good things have been done and that is why we have to support it.”
