ZANZIBAR Second Vice-President Mr Hemed Suleiman Abdulla has urged contractors executing water tanks projects in Pemba to speed up to match the time frame agreed in the contracts.

He said the government is committed to resolve water blues challenges facing the people of Pemba, and that it is good for contractors to speed up construction pace, to ensure that the government achieves the goal.

“The government will not extend the construction period contrary to the agreement as stipulated in the contract. We will not tolerate any delays on the side of the contractors,” he said during a visit to inspect five water tank projects with different cubic capacities being built with IMF Covid-19 relief fund, in North and South Pemba regions.

Mr Hemed said that the eighth phase government under President Hussein Mwinyi will not accept any substandard work.

He directed for proper monitoring and supervision of the project, to ensure the tanks are built to required standard and the project completed in a time.

The Second VP also directed the Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals through the Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA) administration, to ensure that equipment such as pipes and pumping machines are available, so that when water tanks’ construction is complete, supply begins immediately.

“We should not allow unnecessary bureaucracy, people are eagerly waiting for water,” he said, adding that ZAWA administration should ensure that the pipes and other machines for the project at the seaport reach the relevant areas in time.

ZAWA Director General Dr Salha Mohamed Kassim said the projects under construction are fulfillment of Dr Mwinyi’s promise to his people to relieve them of all challenges, especially the issue of access to clean water.
