PAET hands over 900m/- health centre in Kilwa

PanAfrican Energy Tanzania (PAET) has handed over a health centre at Chumo ward in Kilwa District, Lindi being part of the company’s ongoing investments in local communities.

PAET commenced construction of the health centre last year, at 380,000 US dollars (900m/-) to provide community members with essential, high-quality health care.

PAET Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager Andrew Kashangaki said the project has been financed entirely by PAET and most of the building materials and labour were supplied within the region.

“We hope that this facility will benefit the local residents for generations to come.

“[And], we remain focused on supporting the industrial growth by delivering a reliable supply of natural gas in the country,” Mr Kashangaki said.

The facility comprises an outpatient’s department, maternity ward, surgical theatre, laboratory, mortuary and a laundry room.

Chumo is one of the most densely populated wards in Kilwa, with five villages and a population of approximately 14,000.

Furthermore, the health centre will also reduce the burden on urban healthcare facilities and alleviate overcrowding in these areas, thereby improving the quality of care for all patients.

The health centre in Chumo will also facilitate the delivery of preventive care and public health education, which can help to preventing the spread of diseases and promote healthy behavior among local communities.

Speaking at the event, Kilwa District Commissioner, Christopher Ngubiagai reiterated the government’s commitment to providing quality health care to the residents of Kilwa.

“I would like to thank PanAfrican Energy, an Orca company for this great support and assistance for the improvement of community health” he said.

The DC spoke of the value of partnership and the key role that the private sector can play in ensuring high-quality social services are delivered to communities that need them.

PAET has invested in health and education in Kilwa District by constructing a kindergarten, a secondary school dormitory and a science lab at Songo Songo Island.

Additionally, PAET has also constructed another health centre in Somanga which is fully operational and constructed along with two dispensaries in Nangurukuru and Nahama wards.

It also funded the construction of a maternity waiting ward in Kinyonga and a primary school in Migeregere.

PAET, which operates the Songo Songo gas to electricity project, is the country’s largest gas producer, meeting approximately 60 per cent of national demand and enabling a significant percentage of all power generation in the country.
