A total of 873 Tanzanian students have benefited from scholarships to study various programmes offered by foreign universities and colleges.
This was revealed by Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Omary Kipanga at the Parliament in Dodoma on Monday saying that those students got the scholarships between 2015 and 2020, courtesy of organizations and various countries.
He revealed the figure as a response to Special Seat MP Fakharia Shomar Khamis who wanted to know the total number of Tanzanians who have benefited from scholarships within the mentioned period.
Elaborating further, he mentioned various countries offering scholarships to Tanzania such as UK, Hungary, China, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Russia, Germany, Mozambique, Thailand, Mauritius, Iran and Indonesia.
Disaggregating the figure, He equally said that from the total number of scholars, men are 587 (67 percent) while females are 286 (33 per cent).
“These scholarships are being jointly coordinated by both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. The responsible departments determine qualifications of applicants and recommend them ….regardless of which part of the Union they are coming from,” he stated.
