NMB out to promote inclusive finance

NMB Bank has initiated another digital finance campaign that aims to promote increased use of the NMB Lipa Mkononi (QR Code) instant payment solution to add yet more impetus to national efforts for the universal availability of financial services.

Targeting to mostly digitalise low-income merchants and entice ordinary folks to go digital, the lender debuted the ‘Onja Unogewe’ promotional drive on Tuesday.

The event was graced by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr Albert Chalamila who lauded NMB for promoting the use of the acceptance technology locally and championing the digital payment service for financial inclusion acceleration in the country.

“Thank you NMB for giving me this opportunity to officiate and be part of launching this huge promotion, which is not only vital for NMB Bank but also very relevant to the whole country,” he said.

According to him, the NMB Lipa Mkononi service like all proximity payments solutions does not only suit low-income customers but also plays a decisive role in advancing inclusive finance and creating a less cash economy.

He added that these payment solutions equally make a lot of security sense to traders and buyers as well as the authorities and law enforcement agencies.

Through the innovation and investment in the campaign, he explained, NMB has once again depicted its commitment to support the national socio-economic development agenda.

“NMB deserves compliments for the Lipa Mkononi creativity, which I am sure all those who try it out will continuously use because of the numerous benefits it accords users,” he said.

Principally, the NMB Lipa Mkononi service enables merchants to instantly receive and accept payments by simply having the bank’s QR Code or Lipa Number.

The lender is using the ‘Onja Unogewe’ campaign to promote the use of its over 100,000 QR Codes across Tanzania.

QR Codes are currently at the top of the ladder globally in facilitating the widespread adoption of electronic payments amongst mostly the unbanked and championing digital financial inclusion.

The NMB’s Chief of Retail Bank, Mr Filbert Mponzi, said apart from enabling merchants to receive payments digitally, the NMB Lipa Mkononi (QR) service also allows customers to pay for goods and services at any point of sale by scanning the QR Code.

The consumer banking expert said the solution serves none NMB customers by accepting payments from all mobile companies and banks that are connected to MasterCard, VISA or Union Pay networks.

“The ultimate goal of all these investments and efforts is to expand the scope of financial inclusion in the country and to support fellow Tanzanians get rid of carrying huge amounts of cash as they explore alternative payment solutions that are also more convenient and safer,” Mr Mponzi noted.
