Yanga send Polisi down

A brace from Zambian striker Davies Mwape in either half, sandwiched by Idrissa Senga’s strike, ended Yanga’s poor run of form which saw the Jangwani Street side suffer back to back defeats at Toto African and Kagera Sugar in their previous two outings. Polisi Dodoma scored their consolation goal deep in the second half through midfielder, Ismail Mkama.

With only one match to play, Polisi Dodoma, remain rooted at the foot of the 14-team table with 17 points from 25 games, five points beyond the borderline line, thus, they are effectively relegated. Yanga, meanwhile, moved to within four points of second-placed Azam FC after reaching 46 points tally from 24 games.

The game started slowly and Yanga had their first meaningful chance on the 15th minute when midfielder, Haruna Niyonzima, set up striker Davies Mwape inside the box but the latter fluffed the chance. Mwape, though rectified his previous mistake by banging in the opener three minutes later after he was released by fellow striker Hamis Kiiza inside the box.

Mwape had another opportunity to add the second on the 30th minute but he failed to connect a low cross delivered by Niyonzima from the right. It all started when Yanga won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and a well crafted move by Niyonzima ended with the Rwandan midfielder whipping in a low cross only to see the burly Zambian arrive late in the box.

Mwape prolonged the misses five minutes later when he, again, failed to poke home another well measured cross from the right. Polisi were a composed side despite trailing their hosts by the lone goal and they had two good chances to test Yanga’s keeper, Yaw Berko, during the closing stages of the half but the Ghanaian shot stopper stood firm between the posts.

The half eventually saw Yanga lead 1-0. Yanga had the upper hand on resumption and threatened their opponents on a couple of occasions. Winger Idrissa Senga, who was by far Yanga’s most hard-working player on the pitch, registered the second on the 55th minute with a left footed shot after he was released by Niyonzima inside the box.

Mwape then bundled home the third six minutes later with a powerful right footed shot from outside the area to complete yet another incisive pass by Niyonzima. Polisi had chance to pull one back on the 68th minute when one of the team’s forwards was clear inside the area but his shot was saved by Berko.

Polisi did score on the 78th minute when Mkama unleashed a 25 metres strike that sailed past Berko into the back of the net. Polisi were a much improved side thereafter as they attacked time and time again only to be frustrated by poor finishing. Substitute Kenneth Asamoah had his best chance to add the fourth goal for Yanga in the stoppage time but he headed a cross from left full back, Oscar Joshua, wide.

Two consecutive defeats the Jangwani Street side endured at the hands of Toto African and Kagera Sugar last week have left the team glued to the third position in the standing with 43 points from 23 matches. Yanga suffered a 3-2 defeat to Toto African at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza before succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Kagera Sugar at the latter’s backyard, Kaitaba Stadium, and that effectively saw them let go of the trophy they were keen on defending.
