Time for our clubs to flourish

Tanzania will parade Yanga and Simba from the Mainland while Zanzibar envoys are Mafunzo and Pemba’s Jamhuri. Yanga and Mafunzo will be battling for honours in the Club Champions League, while Simba and Jamhuri will compete in the Confederation Cup.

Yanga will encounter Zamalek from Egypt at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, while Simba travel to Kigali, Rwanda to test SC Kiyovu tenacity on the same day.

Mafunzo and Jamhuri will all be at home to face Muçulmano de Maputo of Mozambique and Hwange of Zimbabwe respectively.   The chance to test the resolve of other teams in CAF interclub competitions is certainly not a new phenomenon for the local clubs, especially Simba and Yanga. The two sides have for the past three decades been regulars in all CAF organised club competitions as each has so far made close to 20 appearances.

With the tournaments’ kick off just around the corner, we believe that our envoys have made adequate preparations to face the challenges ahead. We wish our clubs best of luck to flourish in their assignments.    Last year, all our envoys failed miserably in their respective campaigns and pundits pointed out to poor preparations and extremely weak leagues both in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar as the teams’ main undoing.

While there are signs that the national soccer team Taifa Stars is gradually returning back to old bad days of ‘Lunatic Head’ where anyone can learn how to shave, the story is becoming increasingly worse at club level. Local clubs have continued to be the whipping boys in continental tournaments to the disappointment of fans, which are yearning for the repeat of the days when local teams used to be among forces to be reckoned with.

In fact since Simba qualified for the prestigious Africa Clubs Championship’s group stage about nine years ago, no local team has ever repeated that feat. The only other time a local team got that far was in 1998 when a youthful Yanga squad defied all odds to secure a place in the last eight. Both Simba and Yanga are expected to learn from their mistakes and wage a successful campaign this time around.
