Tigo boosts health service delivery in Misungwi

Territory Manager Lake Region Joseph Mutalemwa presented the motorbikes to the District Medical Officer, Dr Marco Mwita Magesa during a handover ceremony at Misungwi District Hospital.

The motorbikes will provide rapid responses to medical emergencies, providing speedier healthcare for sick people to whom reliable and speedy transport make big difference between life and death.

"Access to health structures is particularly difficult in rural areas where there are long distances to cover and transport facilities are limited," said Mr Mutalemwa, adding: "The motorbikes will provide an affordable and practical solution to overcoming some of the main logistical barriers for the rural people."

Deputy Minister of Communications, Science and Technology Charles Kitwanga said; "We would like to thank Tigo for the donation of the motorbikes, and for the Misungwi Council for administering their use across the district. The donation will be of great support to those in need of health services in the district."

The motorbikes will leave each day to serve the 15 remote health centres, some of them as far away as 135 kilometres.
"The primary focus is to improve access to health care during childbirth, in particular emergency obstetric care services, and help women and their babies receive medical follow up after delivery," said Dr Mwita, "They will also be used to transport women suffering from postpartum complications such as postpartum haemorrhage, retained placenta, obstetric fistula and (other emergencies like) road-traffic accidents."

Under its Social Corporate Responsibility initiative, Tigo's vision is to improve the quality of life of local communities by contributing efforts and resources to the development of sustainable initiatives in education, environment and wellbeing.
