The emergence of several contenders amidst the continued expectations from the traditional Big Two has had even fans of Simba and Young Africans claiming that the status quo no longer exists.
While most of the focus and expectations will remain on both defending champions Yanga and Simba, the free spending ways of Azam FC has been one of the biggest stories in the recent months, capped by their latest victories against Yanga and Simba in Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.
But the main ingredient we see coming into the fore is the lack of force of the teams just outside the standard top two of Simba and Yanga and the emergency of Azam FC.
Apparently, with an exception of Azam FC and Mtibwa Sugar of Morogoro that are likely to continue challenging Simba and Yanga for the top two spots, nothing much is expected from the rest of the teams basing on the kind of preparations put in place. As predicted in the first round Azam FC look set to be the team to upset the odds this season, as they've gone out and splashed some serious cash over summer transfer window and the arrival of experienced midfielder Abdi Kassim this December will definitely inspire them to keep pushing Simba and Yanga at the tight angle.
Without doubt, their squad on paper now looks like a very strong premier league title contenders. It depends on whether they have the ability to transfer that potential into reality and a strong start to the second round will definitely see Azam FC changing the top flight football course of history.
Mtibwa Sugar as usual, have always been pace setters and their role is not expected to remain the same. They struggled a bit in the first round but to some extend proved that they are capable of taking the storms and could be a potent weapon against their opponents.
Whether it is healthy for the league to remain a two horse race, it is debatable but many soccer analysts believe that a strong league should have much more competitive teams. Time is up for other top flight teams such as JKT Ruvu, Toto Africa, Kagera Sugar, Polisi Dodoma, African Lyon, Ruvu Shooting and JKT Oljoro of Arusha to show seriousness and challenge in the league.
