Stars can tame the Elephants; why not?

Stars can tame the Elephants; why not?

There is every good reason to believe that. Stars will face a team full of world top class stars such as Didier Drogba of European Champions Chelsea and Yaya Toure of England Champions Manchester City. In contrast, Stars are nowhere near to be seen in the upper half of FIFA rankings in any given year.

We always wallow somewhere in the near bottom. This has got to do with our dismal performances in international matches. There is also a clear slump in public interest in the team. Yet, football remains a game of chances and even the ‘invincible’ Cote d’Ivoire could be beaten.

Why not? Our players should put their all against the strong Ivoirians and go for outright victory. Our players should not be intimidated by the big names in the West African team. The Ivoirians are no superhuman; they are no supernatural beings either.

This means that they are beatable and in fact, they have not always been winning matches. If anything, Taifa Stars should borrow a leaf from Zambia’s Chipolopolo, who caused one of the biggest upsets in African football when they beat Ghana earlier this year and won the African Cup of Nations. The Stars should be more confident now after showing potential in recent years by winning big matches. They beat Burkina Faso twice in their 2006/7 AFCON campaign.

They also managed to hold mighty Senegal to a 1-1 draw in Mwanza, after losing 4-0 in Dakar in the same campaign. Taifa Stars also had a positive result against starstudded Cameroon after holding them to a goalless draw in the 2008/9 AFCON campaign in Dar es Salaam and gave the mighty West Africans a torrid time away in Yaoundé, where they lost 2-1.

Hopefully, the Stars can rediscover the same team spirit that led them to perform better against tough opponents and get positive results. Confidence is a key for Stars players to win, win and win again.
