The school activations will culminate in matches against US based AND1 basketball team which is scheduled to arrive in the country on 26th April for a series of competitive matches against All Star teams in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Arusha.
This is the second time that the topflight AND1 team is visiting Tanzania following their maiden tour last year when they showcased their basketball prowess by beating Dar All Stars at a well-attended basketball derby held at Leaders Club in the city.
The Leaders Club basketball court is one of the courts that Coca-Cola has face-lifted in a bid to promote basketball in Tanzania. Others are Soweto in Arusha, Police College and Baptist in Moshi, CCM Kirumba in Mwanza and the exercise to improve more basketball courts in other parts of the country, courtesy of Coca-Cola, is in progress.
Coca-Cola has since 2010 sponsored three youth basketball clinics and the initial one was held at Don Bosco under the supervision of Tanzania basketball icon Hasheem Thabeet, the only Tanzanian that has managed to find his way to the high ranks of professional basketball in the US.
To further inspire the youths, Coca-Cola in November 2010 sent three outstanding basketball players to attend a two-week basketball course in the US where they got rare opportunity to rub shoulders with professional players and experienced coaches. Basketball enjoys huge following, especially among youth adults in the US.
Other Sprite Slam activities on calendar this year are the U-16 League, Hasheem U-17 clinic, Regional finals, Grand Concert and Zone V Championships.
