Simba must have belief – to the end

They are the dark horses. The Mainland giants will play Setif in front of the latter’s home fans tonight, in which a draw of any margin will be enough to see the Tanzanian side through to the second round of the second major continental club event. Simba powered to a 2-0 victory over Setif in the first leg match played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on March 25 to stay in a relatively better position as far as progressing to the next round is concerned.

However, Entente Setif can never be taken lightly even after players’ boycott report emerged from the team’s camp last Monday. And, this is to say, the danger for Simba lies exclusively at Setif tonight. Reports from Algeria revealed that Setif players informed the club’s management that they will not play Simba if their salary arrears are not settled but Simba should completely ignore such information as mere mind games and instead, they need to focus on getting good results to seal their place in the second round.

Setif are certainly no joke, however, and while a 0-2 defeat from Simba in the first leg might not tell the tale of a side full of attacking flair, they are certainly well organised, technically sound and defensively solid. It does not mean though that Simba are already losers. They are capable of carting away good results if they are really so determined.

With the group of players they have, Simba have shown that they can handle big games. For the past nine years or so, only one Mainland Premier League team managed to break in the last eight of the continental football and that is none other than Simba. Regardless of the strength of their latest opponents, Simba reminded us of their qualities against the ‘Maghreb’ teams during the first leg encounter. Their best hopes remain on the quality and determination of players who have a duty to believe until the end.
