Over 156 lives lost in Kagera last year

Mr Salewi disclosed that in 2011, a total of 189 accidents were recorded, out of which 128 were fatal, claiming 156 lives. “Many innocent lives could be saved if drivers were careful while driving.

“Pedestrians should also be careful. My advice to them is to ensure that a pedestrian walks on his/her right side to enable them to see the vehicle coming ahead,” he said. He also said that a total of 436.6m/- was collected by the traffic department in Kagera Region in 2011.

He said the revenue was collected from fines committed by unruly drivers. The offences included reckless driving, over speeding, driving defective vehicles and over loading. Mr Salewi also warned police officials to avoid demanding bribes  because such acts tarnished the good image of the police force.
