Our teams need good preps

The emergence of several contenders amidst continued expectations from the traditional Big Two has had even Simba and Young Africans fans claiming that the status quo no longer exists as was proved last season when the latter found itself out of the tape, with Azam finishing as runner-up. While most of the focus and expectations will still remain on both defending champions Simba and Yanga, Azam’s strength cannot be ignored.

Of course, Azam, the 2012 Kagame Cup finalists, made headlines in the past months. So what will the upcoming Premier season have in store for us? Again, the main ingredient we see coming into play is the lack of force of the teams just outside the standard top three of Simba and Yanga and the emergency of Azam.

Apparently, with an exception of Azam, Coastal Union of Tanga and Mtibwa Sugar of Morogoro who are likely to challenge Simba and Yanga for the top two spots, frankly nothing much is expected from the rest of the teams basing on the kind of preparations and focus being put in place. Again, Azam look set to be the team to upset the odds this season.

They have maintained team’s cohesion with few new faces coming in and the change of technical bench will have a little bearing on the team’s playing pattern as was proved last Tuesday in the Community Shield encounter against Simba. Coastal Union have gone out and splashed some serious cash over this transfer window bringing in few quality players and we expect them to pose tough challenge.

Mtibwa Sugar have always been challengers and their role is not expected to remain that way. The team’s ability to maintain their squad could be a potent weapon against their opponents. However, as Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) vowed recently, they will ensure that the league is one of the best in the continent. But such a dream would be just that – a dream -- if the league would remain a two or three horse race time and again.
