In a poorly attended match, both teams did not show impressing game, but Mozambique players were lucky, while host team Mafunzo’s players failed to utilize the ample opportunities in the second half. Muculmana’s goals were scored by Mauricio Pegnuerino at 11th minute before Manuel Mbalango at the 22nd minute. Both goals were a result of a corner kick by Mustapha Ismail.
Mafunzo’s defeat at home marked a poor start by Zanzibar teams in the continental club competitions after Jamhuri FC suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Hwange of Zimbabwe in the first leg of the Confederation Cup’s preliminary round played at Gombani Stadium in Pemba Island on Saturday.
To turn the tables, Mafunzo will need to overcome the Mozambicans by three clear goals at the latter’s home venue two weeks later. Jamhuri, meanwhile, will need a win of over four clear goals at their opponent’s backyard to progress to the first round, a feat that undoubtedly looks difficult to achieve for the former.
