Insecurity threatens economic progress, says IGP

Mr Mwema made the call at an event organised by Exim Bank to award five police officers who have excelled in serving the Force in various aspects.

He said participation of the public in security, preventing and fighting criminal activities was still very low in the country because many people believe that the role of keeping law and order is the responsibility of the government alone.

"Keeping law and order should be everybody's responsibility if the country is to register success in both social and economic development. "We should not tolerate the breach of peace and order because that will undermine the country's development," he said.

Mr Mwema said the Police Force will continue rendering support to various financial institutions in a bid to create a conducive environment for them to do business. Earlier, the Exim Bank Managing Director, Mr Anthony Grant, said there was need for the Police Force to work closely with banks and financial institutions, especially during this era of money laundering and terrorism.

"Crime in the financial world is becoming more sophisticated and challenging, especially in areas like money laundering and financing of terrorism.

"The alertness of the Tanzania's Police Force in detection of crime has not only discouraged most people from breaking the law but also compelled them to exercise self-discipline making Tanzania to be more peaceful place to invest compared to other places."

Exim Bank that celebrated its 15th Anniversary yesterday awarded five Police Officers who were shortlisted by the Police Force with a brand new motorcycle each, a certificate of recognition and a medal. They are Inspector Abel Swai, Sergeant Vicent Chikupe, Assistant Inspector Dorina Poyo, Detective Constable Banda Mtani and Police Constable Mathias Man'gombe
