DRC insecurity worries Kikwete

Mr Kikwete said Tanzania was closely monitoring the situation and would like to see peace returning in the DRC so that the country would focus on development issues instead of fighting.

The President said this on Tuesday when he met the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Prof Ntumra Luaba Alphonce in Bujumbura, Burundi.

"Tanzania is worried by the state of affairs in the DRC and is carefully following up the situation. The country has experienced war for too long," said Mr Kikwete, noting that since 1997 the country had not known peace.

The 2012 crisis in the DRC became front-page news in April as General Bosco Ntaganda, an International Criminal Court indictee, staged a mutiny from the Congolese national army (FARDC).

Mr Kikwete on Tuesday met with the DRC President Mr Joseph Kabila while in Bujumbura. President Kikwete was in Burundi to attend the country's 50th independence celebrations. Last Sunday he was in Kigali for similar celebrations. He returned home on Tuesday.
