Michael Sekei, 41, conspired with four armed bandits to raid the said shop located at Mjohoroni in Moshi urban area, Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander (RPC) Absalom Mwakyoma told a press conference here on Monday.
The bandits managed to rob 2m/- and various goods whose value was yet to be known, the RPC said. Mr Mwakyoma said the robbery incident occurred on Sunday night at 11.15 pm. The deceased, met his death during a gun battle between his employer, James Elinsa Ringo, 39, and the bandits. The shop is 40 metres away from Ringo’s residential house.
The body of the deceased was preserved at Mawenzi Regional Hospital and Mr Ringo was in police hands for interrogation over the incident. Meanwhile, police have recovered a Riffle with serial number 12243 which was used by bandits to rob a resident of Mbale village in Marangu, Moshi rural area.
According to Mr Mwakyoma, the firearm was found hidden in a bush adjacent to a land of one Thomas Deogratius Ramsoni, 70, a resident of Lyamrakana village, Marangu East Ward in Moshi rural area. The Riffle was found by the children of Ramsoni who were collecting fruits in the area and the matter was immediately reported to the police who rushed to the area and collected the firearm and some cartridges.
Mr Mwakyoma has hailed residents in the area for their selfless cooperation that led to the recovery of the Riffle and urged them to maintain cooperation which he said was necessary in stamping out criminals in their communities.
On February 10 this year, six armed thugs stormed a residential house of Emmanuel Charles, a resident of Mbale village in Marangu, grabbed a RAV 4 motor vehicle with registration number T 700 BEQ and a golden chain valued at 200,000/-.
Immediately after the bandits had committed the offence, Marangu residents were informed of the presence of the bandits in the area and fixed a barrier across a bridge to block their escape, he said.
The RPC explained that when they saw the barrier, five bandits armed with a riffle and a pistol jumped out of the stolen motor vehicle and escaped from the area. The vehicle driver was then placed under siege by the angry mob who, using traditional weapons at their disposal, bashed him and death.
