BFT Secretary General, Makore Mashaga said on Monday that the boxers were selected after the test competition held on Dar es Salaam over the weekend. He named those picked and their weights in brackets as John Christian and Said Pume (lightfly), Abdalah Kassimu and George Costantine (fly), Emilian Patrick and Undule Langson (bantam), Denis Martine and Fabian Gaudence.
Others are Victor Njaiti and Hamisi Kitenge (lightwelter), Mohamed Mhibumbui (welter), Selemani Kidunda and Abdul Rashid (middle), Mhina Morris (heavy) and super heavy include Haruna Swanga, Nuru Ibrahim and Maxmillian Patrick. Mashaga said all the boxers are supposed to report to BFT offices by Tuesday for a more comprehensive training programme.
BFT released the name of 51-national team players last month who underwent training and trials ahead of picking a final list that will represent the country in the Olympic Games, later this year. He said the 17-boxers will compete as a team in a national championship early next month adding that only the best will be retained.
“If we are satisfied with their standards then they will move into residential training camp before travelling to Morocco for Olympic qualifiers in May this year where we are planning to send a team of ten from flyweight to heavyweight,” said Mashaga.
