Air Tanzania set to bring in another plane

ATCL Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Paul Chizi said over the weekend that the company is now focused to implement its five-year corporate strategic plan that includes coverage of regional destinations. The company resumed its active business last Friday with a Dar es Salaam-Kilimanjaro-Mwanza flight.

“We are determined to implement the five year business plan that will help increase the company’s efficiency and service delivery”, he said. ATCL acquired the 108-seater Boeing 737-500 plane from Aero Vista of Dubai last week after its services were severely affected when its only plane in service- DASH 8 was involved in an accident at Kigoma Airport recently during take off.

“We need to win back our lost glory as a national flag carrier that is committed to safety and top service. To be able to achieve this, we will be acquiring another Boeing plane and negotiations have already begun”, he said.  He asked for public support and especially from its loyal customers whom he said have kept the company operating despite ups and downs.

He said ATCL has introduced special fares for Mwanza and Kilimanjaro destinations from Dar es Salaam whereby return ticket holders will pay 199,000/-. On the other hand, the public has called for government financial support to enable the national flag carrier to operate smoothly.

Retired High Court Judge Steven Ihema said the airliner can achieve its lost glory if it is given the necessary support. Meshack Bandawe who is the Parastatal Pensions Fund (PPF) Lake Zone Manager said that ATCL should embark on international flights to support the country’s tourism sector.

“For a sustainable growth of ATCL, Tanzanians should be patriotic and support the company”, the official said.  Industrial analysts say that ATCL’s resumption of flights will redefine the aviation sector which has been dominated by private players for a long time.
