Asmah: Tanzanian lady elected in FINA committee

TANZANIA Swimming Association’s Vice chairperson, Asmah Hilal has been elected in a member of the Aquatics Integrity Unit of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) committee.

Asmah, who is now in Budapest, Hungary attending the World Swimming Championship as well as Extraordinary Congress, becomes the first Tanzanian to be elected by FINA in its committee.

This is the history for Tanzania to have one member in the World’s swimming governing body and Asmah scooped 260 out of 288 votes.

FINA's Extraordinary General Congress in Abu Dhabi in December last year approved the creation of the Aquatics Integrity Unit on the recommendation of the Reform Committee, and executive director Brent Nowicki told members in Hungary's capital Budapest that the governing body had received an "overwhelming" number of applications totaling more than 80 individuals.

Supporters of the new body argue that it is independent and more effective than the existing FINA Doping Panel, and brings the International Federation into line with others including World Athletics.

Apart from Asmah, the Aquatics Integrity Unit is comprised of five bodies, with Professor Miguel Cardenal Carro of Spain chairing the Supervisory Council.

Also in the committee is Ken Lalo of Israel as the vice-chair, with Caroline Jouisse of France serving as the female athlete member and Serbia's Milan Alkesic as the male athlete member. The Supervisory Council is completed by Australia's Euge Buckley and Tanzania's Asma Hilal.

Asmah said through telephone that she is very happy to be elected in the post she applied a few months ago.

She explained that there were many aspirants in the committee and she thanked God for being elected.

“It is milestone for the Tanzania’s swimming fraternity due to the fact I will playing a major role in supervising the integrity of the game in the world.  I’m very happy to get this chance,” Asmah said.

For her part, the association’s secretary general, Inviolata Itatiro lauded Asmah for being elected in the committee.

“It is a top honour to the country since will help in the promotion of the game in the country,” added Inviolata.
