U-20 EA Athletic: Tanzania outshined

ETHIOPIA dominated the prize podium as Tanzanian athletes were eclipsed in the opening day of the East African Youth Athletic Championship at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Friday.

Tanzania Mainland’s best performance in the opener was a silver medal in high jump through Elia Clement who cleared 6.55m behind the Ethiopian Diriba Girima who cleared 7.17m.

In 100m dash for athletes aged below 18, Tanzanian Lucia  Pius won the bronze medal after clocking 13:22 behind the winner Demorytu Sheferahu from Ethiopia who clocked 12:59.

The runner up in the 100m dash was Fatma Salum from Zanzibar who clocked 12:68.

Tanzania suffered a big blow in the 100m for men when Baraka Banarnabas was disqualified after crossing the lane.

The winner of the race was Lenkone Joseph from Kenya who spent 10:31 to win the 100m race.

The second position was taken by Semi Thiel of South Sudan who clocked 10:63 while Tanzanian Elia Clement won bronze after spending 10:75.

Ethiopians dominated the men’s 3,000m race through Yibiltal Tilahaum who won gold in 08:19.48 followed by a Kenyan Langati Amos who clocked 08:20.38 and Desa Legan also from Ethiopia who won bronze in 08:23.20.

According to Athletics Tanzania’s Secretary General seven countries are participating in the championship whose climax is late today at the same venue.

Besides the hosts Tanzania Mainland, other countries are Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan and Somalia.
