Defence Minister raises 30m/- for Lady Golfers

MINISTER for Defence and National Service, Stergomena Tax has raised over 30m/- at the Tanzania People's Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo golf club of Dar es Salaam for Lady Golfers Development fund.

The fund was raised during the closing ceremony of the Lugalo Ladies Open at the club over the weekend.

The Minister contributed 25m/-, while the other 5.3m/- were collected as pledges from the tournament’s  sponsors and golfers after the Minister called them help lady golfers while she complimented  the club for its efforts in rediscovering and developing golf talent.

"I would like to thank NMB and NBC for enabling me to raise the funds. I call on government institutions such as the National Sports Council (NSC) to support the club's efforts in promoting this sport," she stated.

Tax said she needs to start afresh in the sport after staying out of the course for almost a decade. She vowed to continue supporting a good foundation laid on promoting lady golfers so as to make them improve their game  so that they excel in the international competitions.

She also urged the sponsors and other stakeholders to start investing in the game in order to promote it further as it is one of the sports that have a lot of potential, but is yet to get desirable attention.

Tax has encouraged more women to come forward to learn golf, emphasizing sports are good for relaxing the mind and health well-being.

However, she urged the organisers to continue  improving he competition by expanding the scope to more foreign players.

She said sports are one of the army's priorities so their main strategy is based on enabling a better environment for athletes to practice and commended ladies’ achievements.

The Minister has also challenged men to wake up and do better to promote the country’s sport internationally.

Lugalo Chairman Michael Luwongo thanked the Minister for accepting their call and joining them and using the opportunity to congratulate her for  being appointed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

"The club is proud to have this second Ladies Open competition staged successfully, I congratulate Lugalo Ladies captain Hawa Wanyeche and her committee for the hard work they have done," he said.

Wanyeche was speechless due to the Minister's significant contribution to her section, she  promised her that they have a talented treasurer and thus assuring her that the money will be spent as intended.

"On behalf of the ladies section, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you the Minister, you have done great for us, and you have made us proud, ” Wanyeche said.

The Minister also presented trophies and prizes to the winners of the two-day tournament in which hosts Angel Eaton successfully defended her title by scoring 148 gross after two rounds of 36 holes.

She thanked Qatar Airways, Precision Air, Akiba Commercial Bank, Serena Hotel, Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited Group (METL), Pepsi, Serengeti, Lake Oil, Sana Industries and 24/7 Adventure for bankrolling the event.
