Premier to grace UDSM 7th research, innovation week

PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa is today expected to open the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) 7th Research and Innovation Week (RIW), scheduled to take place for three days.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam over the weekend, the UDSM Vice-Chancellor, Prof William Anangisye said the PM will visit and inspect 103 innovative and research projects that have excelled in their activities.

Prof Anangisye said they will highlight 103 projects that performed well among more than 300 research and innovative projects undertaken by the university.

“This academic year, we have conducted at least 300 innovations and research projects, but there are 103 best-performing projects such as the off-grid mobile universal digital laboratory and smart glove for the hearing and speech impaired,” said Prof Anangisye.

He added that another project is smelter for copper extraction for Artisanal and Small Scale Miners (ASMs) in Tanzania.

He said at the event, there will also be an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between UDSM and various national and international stakeholders.

“We will have a full day of special strategic partnership discussions involving stakeholders from the private and public sectors as well as journalists, whose discussion will focus on industry, entrepreneurship, trade, innovation and research,” said Prof Anangisye.

The don further said in recognition of the contribution of UDSM scholars and students in the field of research, innovation, and knowledge exchange, the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adolf Mkenda will present awards to the best innovators and researchers.

He mentioned the categories that will compete for the prize as project research, the best researcher and the best innovator, where each will get 20m/-.

Others are departments/units that have invested huge amounts in research, and innovation, as well as researchers who have invested a huge amount of funds in research, excellent postgraduate projects, undergraduate degree as well as excellent community service projects.
