Traders ditch Mombasa for Dar es Salaam Port

IMPORT volumes at the Dar es Salaam port are all set to ride up as traders from East African’s landlinked countries ditch Mombasa--the other port in the region as a result of a forthcoming presidential election in the neighbouring Kenya.

Traders from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern D.R Congo are opting for the Dar es Salaam port as their exit and entry port due to raising election temperature.

Over 5.3billion Kenyan shillings was lost monthly from the cargo transport sub-sector during the 2007-2008 post-election violence, according to the Kenya Transporters Association, mainly from hijacking and looting of trucks by criminal gangs.

The Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association ( KIFWA), an affiliate of the Federation of East African Freight Forwarders Associations (FEAFFA) has noted there has been increased export of minerals from DR Congo through Dar.
