15 clubs spice up Dar swimming gala

OVER 200 athletes from 15 clubs line up at FK International School’s pool today for maiden Blue Marlins invitational swimming gala at  Bahari Beach.

The clubs to be engaged in a swimming showdown are Dar es Salaam  Club, Mwanza  Club, Bluefins, Taliss-IST, Lake Swim Club, Champion Rise Club and Arusha Swim Club.

Also in the list are Wahoo Zanzibar, MIS Piranhas, Braeburn Sharks, Pigec  Club, Train 2 Gain Club, Milestone Swim Club, St Constantine International and the host FK Blue Marlins.

FK Blue Marlins team’s manager Opalina Nanyaro said preparations of the showdown are complete and swimmers will compete for titles  in 125 disciplines.

The  event has been sponsored by Shoppers Kahawa Cafe, Cool Blue, EFM, Doctors Plaza Polyclinic, PRO Fixers Tanzania, FK International Schools, Viscar Integrated Consulting (TZ) Limited, Coca Cola and GardaWorld.

“The event aims to scout new talented athletes as well as gauging skills ahead of international competitions,” she said.

She said completion will use World swimming governing body (FINA) rules and swimmers will contest according to their age groups.

Nanyaro said there will be a Masters category for adult swimmers aged 25 and above.

She said medals will be awarded to the top three swimmers.

She said trophies will be awarded to the winners of various age groups with the exception of Masters’ age group.

Medals will be also awarded to winning teams in relay events, but with no points to be given as all categories will be on heat declared finals.

Each swimmer can enter a maximum of six individual events and two relays and each club or school will field a maximum of two swimmers per event and there will be only one relay team per event (freestyle and medley).

She said the swimmers will battle it out for medals in five styles, namely backstroke, butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley.

The swimmers will also compete in relay. The event will see the country’s top ranked swimmers meeting challengers from other clubs in the country.

Nanyaroa said the clubs are now in intensive training ahead of the today’s event.
