World Earth Day: What are you doing to save the planet?

This year, the one sentence call to all businesses, organizations, governments and individuals is “invest in our planet.” Every year on April 22nd we celebrate World Earth Day. It is a a day set to recognize the peril that our planet faces as a result of our economic activities.

Since it is our doing that is causing the ongoing demise of the planet, it is only a conscious call that we act to reverse the damage that we have already caused. Thanks to the still existing forest covers in Africa and Asia, the two continents are now considered the lungs of the world.

However, forests and marine ecosystems in both continents are placed at higher risk of extinction every year. Unfortunately, forests, the World’s last environmental strong holds, are been destroyed by the day.

As the West and other developed nations did, Africa and Asia are cutting down trees (and destroying marine ecosystems) in the name of economic development.

Take Tanzania for instance, this Eat African nation is one of Africa’s largest countries and is home to considerably large forest cover however; National Resource Monitoring and Assessment of Tanzania Mainland (NAFORMA) estimates that charcoal and firewood uses for cooking are behind the loss of almost 460,000 hectares of forests cover per year! On this World Earth Day it is time to make a change and the change starts with you.

As the World Earth Day Organisation puts it; “This is the moment to change it all — the business climate, the political climate, and how we take action on climate.

Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods.” Businesses Stepping Up To The Challenge With this call in mind, businesses are stepping up to the challenge.

Companies like the leading direct selling company QNET, are taking action. In partnership with EcoMatcher, QNET launched the Green Legacy Initiative. As of 2021, the Green Legacy Initiative, an active action plan to reforest and afforest key areas of Africa and Asia, has planted over 1000 trees across three continents. “This initiative reiterates QNET’s commitment towards sustainability.

Planting trees actively protects nature and helps improve local ecosystems as well as generate sustainable agro-forestry livelihoods for local communities,” explained Biram Fall In a media press release issued on World Earth Day, Mr. Fall said, “…through the Green Legacy programme, we are contributing to the UN’s SDG10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG13 (Climate Action), and SDG15 (Life on Land).”

Through this programme, QNET has planted and reforested three forests which collectively support communities living around and within these forest areas.

As a celebration of the World Earth Day, QNET’s Green Legacy Initiative helps reduce the global carbon footprint. The three forests alone will sequester 750 tonnes of CO2 over the lifetime of the trees, a commendable initiative that humbly responds to the global cry for businesses to take action.

In Africa, the forests are planted in the Eastern Kenyan highlands and in the Philippines, the indigenous trees are being planted in the Sierra Madre Mountain range, while in the UAE, mangrove trees are being planted along the western coast of Dubai.

Along with the planting of trees that are reversing climate change, the initiative is also changing lives by supporting socio-economic development of the communities where the forests are planted; building a legacy so to speak.

Further still, QNET is an advocate for supply and access to clean water around the world, and last month, during the World Water Day (22 March) the company showcased several water sanitation solutions for Africa.

Access to clean and safe water is an integral part of the World Earth Day, by saving and preserving water catchment areas like forests, QNET is playing a central role iin businesses taking action to save the planet.

From the forests on Kenyan highlands to your home, the company also leads in the deployment of a line of clean water products including several water distillation gadgets under it HomePure products.

“Access to clean and safe water is part of QNET’s global strategy that responds to the need to provide sustainable solutions to the problem of access to safe drinking water,” Mr. Fall points out. He also highlighted the fact that just like the Green Legacy Initiative is creating employment for families, the distribution of HomePure products also employs thousands of youth and women, around the world.

What Are You Doing To Save The Planet? The global call for Earth Day 2022, is “…we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably).” ‘It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens, everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet.”

As a planet, ‘we need to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century to keep the global temperature below 1,5°C. Because a green future is a prosperous future.’ The Earth Day 2022 Theme is Invest In Our Planet. What Will You Do?
