Pamba turn surprise package in ASFC

PAMBA are this season’s surprise package in the Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) contest after gallantly marching into the quarter final stage. That is the highest stage for the Championship side.

But it was not easy for them to reach this far as they had to clear Premier League teams’ hurdles by posting sweet victories to make themselves stand firm in the competition and here they are now dining on the same table with the Premier League envoys.

Though they are still struggling to get back to the Premier League next season, the ASFC success can be best opportunity for them to prove their value. Pamba deserve applause for the achievement and their feat should serve as a warning to others that the well drilled Mwanza based club will not be a pushover.

However, the future of Pamba in ASFC lies in the hands of the holders Simba SC, who are their next hurdle in their way for the tournament’s semis.

On paper, many people can confidently give Simba a big chance of emerging victors on the day as they believe that the Msimbazi Street Reds have whatever it takes to go as far as retaining the title.

But, in reality, football is most often full of surprises and the minnows are always dangerous when facing giants, especially in the knockout stages.

Facing Simba turns to be a big test for Pamba of which they need to make thorough preparation. Hopefully they will approach the game with a ‘nothing to lose mentality’ which will be tricky for the Msimbazi Street-based giants.

To reach this far, Pamba defeated Dodoma Jiji 2-1 while Simba humiliated Ruvu Shooting 7-0, hence football fraternity are expecting to see an interesting football game from both teams.

Besides the Simba Pamba match, another tense quarterfinals game will be between Young Africans and Geita Gold with the latter believing that they have what it takes to bundle their opponents out.

Though Yanga will host the match at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, it is not a guarantee for them to have a smooth ride over Geita.

In simple terms, this will be another unpredictable affair bearing in mind that whenever the two sides meet, the encounter is always tough. Their first meeting in the NBC Premier League ended 1-0 in favour of Yanga. The slim win indicates Geita Gold are not pushovers.

Now, the Geita-based outfits have an opportunity to avenge for the Premier League match’s loss. According to a draw conducted recently at Azam Media Limited headquarters here, it also witnessed Azam being paired against Polisi Tanzania while Coastal Union will host Kagera Sugar.

However, the possibilities to once again watch Dar es Salaam derby in the ASFC season is high just like what happened in the past two seasons when Simba and Yanga met at the final stage. In both instances, Simba emerged winners. In the first meeting they won 4-1 while in last season, they won 1-0 in a thrilling finale held in Kigoma.

Another tense game in the last eight will be between Azam and Polisi Tanzania as each has the required machinery to make it into the semis.

Azam were among heavy winners in the round of 16 after mercilessly outclassing Baga Friends 6-0 while Polisi Tanzania saw off Tanzania Prisons 2-0 to squeeze into the last eight category. In another match pitting Coastal Union versus Kagera Sugar, it is a balanced game which could go either way depending on which team will wake up from the right side of the bed.

Coastal Union hammered Mtibwa Sugar 2-0 while Kagera Sugar produced a slim 1-0 win over Namungo to claim the quarterfinal berth as such; until now, neither of them is guaranteed to sail into the next stage until the final whistle sounds.
