Bumper entry to brighten 2022 Waitara Golf trophy

BUMPER entry is anticipated as Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Club announced January 29th as the date of this year’s Waitara Trophy Golf Tournament.

The day-long 18 holes tournament will tee off on the said date at the par 72 course.

The club’s Chairman Michael Luwongo confirmed in Dar es Salaam yesterday that preparations for the club’s biggest thriller is on a top gear though the event could not take place last year due to various reasons.

Luwongo said the prestigious course which aims to honour General (rtd) George Waitara, the founder of the course, is once again bankrolled by Serengeti Breweries Limited.

The Chairman thanked the sponsor SBL for their tireless support towards the club’s development through the tournament’s backing. “We thank Serengeti through its John Walker banner.

They have been with us for years and this kind of support makes it easy for us to organise such an event,” he said. Luwongo added that Waitara Trophy is one of the club’s top events in this year’s calendar and it will serve as the season opener.

“It is an honour for us to have such a tournament, General Waitara has been doing a wonderful job to develop golf at the club and now many golfers from the grassroots level to the seniors have a chance to enjoy the beauty and facilities at the course,” he said.

He, however, noted that golf clubs across the country have been invited to take part in the one-day event. Luwongo added the course is in good shape despite being in a rainy season. It is well-prepared to host the golfers.

He said the tournament is open for amateurs, men and ladies, while professionals are also invited to play.

Sponsor’s representative, Lumuli Minga from SBL, said it is a big honour to be given another chance to back the prestigious event. She assures the club of the company’s commitment and continued support of the events staged there.

Top amateurs including Tanzania Open Champion Isihaka Daudi of TPDF Lugalo and the nation team captain, Victor Joseph of Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) are among the top contenders of the title and this event renews their old rivalry.

Joseph, one of East African Community’s top amateurs, was shocked by Daudi in the last Tanzania Open Championship staged at Lugalo club; hence he would want to correct his mistakes.
