EDITORIAL: Why we should embrace integration spirit

EAST African Community (EAC) Heads of State yesterday approved the process of Democratic Republic of Congo’s admission into the regional bloc.

The leaders recommended that imminent negotiations paving way for DRC’s admission into the bloc be undertaken with speed and efficiency.

The virtual 18th Extra Ordinary Summit directed the ministers for regional affairs to expeditiously undertake negotiations with the DR Congo in accordance with the EAC procedures for admission of new members.

Addressing the Summit, President Suluhu underlined the importance of DR Congo joining the bloc as all partner states have long and close collaboration – by either bordering or having trade relations.

She said DRC’s admission into the EAC bloc will enhance prosperity of the citizens and the region. We warmly welcome this huge step towards the admission in the regional bloc of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the second-largest nation on the continent.

Regional integration is a key vehicle for helping the East African region intensify its economic base and create enough jobs for its citizens.

The admission of DRC would assure the Partner States of a widen market, which would certainly enhance intra-regional trade. DR Congo’s population of 92 million has huge potential to contribute to expanded market and investment opportunities.

East African countries have made big strides in attaining economics growth and DRC’s admission not only should boost intraregional trade but also promote competitiveness to ensure sustainable improvements in living standards of their people. We’re, therefore, looking forward to a prompt conclusion of the remaining admission procedures.
