2021 Mwanza boat race draws 300 rowers

OVER 300 rowers representing have been listed for this year’s Regional Boat Race Championship be flagged off at the Mwaloni Market on December 12th, this year.

The unique rowing showdown on the Lake Victoria was revealed here yesterday by Lake Zone Regional Manager of Scope Solutions Manager Ayoub Julius who said there 60 boats involved in the event.

He said the men's race will cover 10 kilometers while women’s race will cover 6 kilometres.

Julius said the races will involve rowers from all districts of the region and winner will pocket 2.5m/-, the runner up will take 1.5m/- and the third-placed finisher will claim 1m/-.

The fourth finisher will walk home with 800,000/-, the fifth 500,000/- and the sixth to tenth finishers will pocket 100,000/-.

The cash prizes will be awarded equally for the winners of the both men and women disciplines.

Adding, he said there will also be a special boating race which will take place in Ukerewe district this weekend at Monarch Beach Resort.

He said the winner will get 1m/-, the second winner 800,000/-, and 500,000 is for the third- placed, 200,000 is set for the fourth winner and the fifth will take home 100,000/-.

On his side, the Chairman of Mwanza Regional Canoe racing, Ludovick Kanebuye, said the form-taking exercise starts today until December 8th.

 He said participation forms are free and will be available at the offices of the fishing officer and the Monarch Beach Resort in Ukerewe.

He added in Ilemela, the forms are available at Bwiru Mchangani, Igombe and Mwalulombe Gole.

Speaking on the occasion, the event’s chief Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) Mwanza through its official, Issa Makani said the competition is very important for the residents of the Lake Region and they have seen it ideal to continue sponsoring it.

He promised to develop the game in the Lake Zone regions.

Makani called upon all participants to report early at the starting point and strictly follow the boat competition’s rules and regulations.
