Three bandits killed in fire exchange

POLICE in Biharamulo district have gunned down three suspected bandits and recovered a sub machine gun (SMG) and 51 rounds of ammunition.

Kagera Regional Police Commander (RPC), Assistant Commissioner Awadhi Juma told reporters that the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday night at Nyabugombe village in Nyakahura ward.

"The police on patrol were tipped regarding a group of armed bandits who were planning to stage a robbery incident. About seven heavily armed bandits opened fire when the law enforcers approached.

“During the exchange of fire three bandits were fatally wounded and died while they were receiving treatment at the Biharamulo District hospital while the four others managed to escape.  Police recovered a sub machine gun (SMG) with two magazines with 51 rounds of ammunition," he said.

ACP Juma explained that one of the bandits was found in possession of an identity card bearing the name of Myitumaye Venance, a Burundi national, resident of Muyinga town.

He said the bodies of the three bandits were being preserved at the Biharamulo District Hospital mortuary. He appealed to people to cooperate with the police by reporting suspects at the nearest police stations.

In a related development, RPC Juma said  Abubakar Nzomukunda (55) a resident of Ngambo village in Biharamulo district was helping police investigation for allegedly  fatally wounding  Abdul Hamis.

He said the incident happened on November 30, this year at around 9 a.m. when the late Hamis went to ask for his money.

Police were also looking for Nzomukunda's wife who had gone into hiding.
