Mwanza aviation radar to boost fish sales

TANZANIA Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) Director General, Hamza Johari has exuded confidence on the economic prospects of the civil aviation radar installed at Mwanza airport.

Mr Johari said the radar, which is part of the 67.3bn/- worth of state-of-the-art equipment installed at three other major airports in the country, will boost the export of fish products from the Lake Zone region.

The TCAA boss, who was addressing the 50th National Air Transport Facilitation Committee here yesterday, was optimistic that the radar coupled with the presence of a modern cold room facility will boost the export of fish products to other countries.

“For quite some time fish products from Tanzania made their way to Europe through Entebbe and Jomo Kenyatta Aiports, however the installation of the radar and extension of the airport will see more airplanes land in Mwanza,” the TCAA boss explained.

Mr Johari also wondered why countries like Belgium preferred Entebbe and JKIA for Freight on board (FOB) services while Mwanza Aiport had all it takes for such services.

“This explains why we’ve also, in our midst, players from fish processing industry to reverse the situation,” he said.

Mr Johari however challenged the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) to hasten expansion of the passengers’ lounge at Mwanza airport.

The current capacity of the lounge is 200,000 passengers per year. The demand has however shot to 250,000 in the recent past.

In his remarks, Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Robert Gabriel Luhumbi told players in the aviation sector that Mwanza is a new kid on the block on tourism front, with the presence of the Saanane National Park, Gunzert house and the iconic Bismarck rock.

“Our region has a lot of untapped potential to compete with other regions,” he said.

Among other things, the radar installed at Mwanza airport is expected to increase revenue generated from air navigation services, thanks to charges that come with air traffic control.
