Govt issues 260 employment permits to engineers

TO ensure smooth implementation of Tanzania Covid -19 Social- Economic Recovery and Response Plan (TCRP), as well as related strategic projects, the government has issued employment permits to 260 engineers.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Minister of State in the President's Office, Public Service Management and Good Governance, Mr Omar Mchengerwa said the opportunity would address shortage of the cadre in regional administration and local government authorities countrywide.

He further said they will be instrumental now that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has launched the TCRP with 1.3tri/- soft loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to uplift the living standard of Tanzanians.

The relief fund will strengthen and improve the delivery and access to social services, including education and health during the pandemic dictations.

“The employment of engineers will be ideal at this moment when, the country has received funds from IMF…they (engineers) will be instrumental in the construction of classrooms, Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) colleges and lecture rooms in 17 teachers' colleges all which are meant to address congestion of students, as a significant measure in the fight against Covid-19,” he said.

Also in the list is the construction of health facilities, purchase of medical equipment, desks and implementation of various water projects that will altogether help in taming the spread of the pandemic.

On top of that, the government has also promoted some 90,000 public servants in ranks to 180,000 in this financial year.

Mr Mchengerwa said this will be a unique opportunity for contractors, suppliers and other stakeholders to do real business and raise the implementation of the programme.

In a related move, the minister remind Human Resource Officers to be guided by the code of conduct in the promotion exercise, insisting that only those who meet the criteria must earn the new status.

However, he noted that the government will not tolerate any misconduct, while also reminding employers to ensure they set aside some budget in the coming financial year to cater for those who will be promoted.

Mr Mchengerwa said employers should ensure they file and put in the system salary arrears, so that they are included in the budget allocation.

He said Human Resource Officers must regularly visit site to listen and address workers’ challenges.

Equally, he underscored the need for planning and procurement officer in all strategic projects to ensure that they monitor and control the funds released by the government for timely execution of the projects.

In the same vein, the minister directed the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau to take stern measures against public servants and executive directors who will be part of the sabotage or delay the strategic projects.
